This site is shut down, and I'm launching earlier than expected http://www.widgetopia.net. the design isn't quite there, and I'm still hitting bugs, but I think you are willing to stick it out (I hope) because the spammers have got me down. MT blacklist can barely keep up. the new site is on drupal, which requires registration, and it was a move I had planned anyway to take advantage of community tools such as moderation. So here we go: the king is dead... long live the king!

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to create an “interesting script, plugin, extension, or widget.†I didn’t think I’d write a Firefox Extension only six days into 2006, but after writing about using the CSS :before and :after pseudo elements to create CSS Curly Quotes, it got me thinking about other uses for that technique. I thought that wrapping the elements on a page with the actual tags from the sourcecode might be a good tool for learning and debugging, but wasn’t sure how to go about creating an extension. Fortunately, I found a great tutorial at roachfiend.com and with a little trial and error, I’ve finished my first extension.

Nevertheless, Hastings is hedging his bets by expanding Netflix into niches that will help it maintain an edge as new rivals emerge. He's positioning it as a film investor and source of high-quality content -- like Home Box Office for DVD rentals. He also wants to be a player in Web distribution, which it will launch by yearend even though Hastings thinks the market for downloading will be tiny for years.
